Like all Cymbopogon species, Java lemongrass is a herb native to Indonesia and Nepal, characterised by long, narrow leaves, and stems and inflorescences that are also linear. Citronella plants are tall, perennial herbs, found both in the wild and in cultivation in tropical regions such as Java and Sri Lanka. Its fresh, green, lemony scent is similar to that of lemon balm, for which it is sometimes used as a substitute.

 Java lemongrass is primarily anti-infectious and anti-inflammatory; it is used topically to treat inflammatory and rheumatic conditions. It repels mosquitoes and soothes bites. It purifies polluted indoor air.
